Magnifier Missing on iPhone? How to Get It Back [Fix]

Reading & Fine Print Updated 3 min read

If Magnifier has disappeared from your iPhone, swipe down on the Home Screen and search for Magnifier. If it does not appear, it was deleted: open the App Store, search for Magnifier by Apple and download it again for free. You can also open it without an icon from Control Center, the Accessibility Shortcut (triple-click the side button), the Action button or Back Tap.

Why the Magnifier icon disappears

There are three usual reasons, and each has a quick fix:

  • It was removed from the Home Screen. The app is still installed and lives in the App Library (swipe left past your last Home Screen page).
  • It is inside a folder. Built-in tools often end up in a Utilities or Extras folder.
  • It was deleted. Since iOS 10, most Apple apps can be deleted. Magnifier can be downloaded again at no cost.

How to get Magnifier back

  1. Search for it. Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen and type Magnifier. If it appears, tap it to open, or touch and hold the icon and drag it onto a Home Screen page.
  2. Look in the App Library. Swipe left until you reach the App Library, then type Magnifier in the search field at the top. Touch and hold the icon and choose Add to Home Screen.
  3. Download it again. If search finds nothing, open the App Store, search for Magnifier and pick the one made by Apple. Tap the download button. Your settings come back with it.
  4. Restart if it still will not show. A restart clears the occasional stuck Home Screen layout after an update.

Open Magnifier without the icon

If you use Magnifier often, a shortcut is faster than any icon:

  • Control Center: open Control Center, touch and hold an empty area (or tap the plus at the top left), choose Add a Control and pick Magnifier.
  • Triple-click: Settings, Accessibility, Accessibility Shortcut, then select Magnifier. Triple-click the side button (or the Home button on older iPhones) to open it.
  • Action button: on iPhones that have one, open Settings, Action Button and swipe to Magnifier.
  • Back Tap: Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap, then choose Double Tap or Triple Tap and select Magnifier. Tap the back of the phone to open it.
  • Siri: say “Open Magnifier”.

Is your screen stuck zoomed in?

Many people searching for a “magnifier on my iPhone screen” are seeing Zoom, a different accessibility feature that enlarges the whole display. Double-tap the screen with three fingers to zoom back out. To turn it off, go to Settings, Accessibility, Zoom and switch Zoom off. If a small floating lens window appears, that is Zoom’s window mode, controlled from the same settings page.

Magnifier opens but the screen is black or blurry

  • Black screen: close other apps that use the camera (video calls, camera apps), then reopen Magnifier. Check that a case or finger is not covering the lens.
  • Blurry image: wipe the camera lens, and hold the phone a little further away. Every camera has a minimum focus distance; closer than that, nothing gets sharp.
  • Flashlight button does nothing: the flashlight is disabled while the iPhone is too hot or the battery is very low. Let the phone cool down or charge it.
  • Still broken: restart, then install the latest iOS update.

If you use Magnifier every day

The built-in app is good for quick looks. If you keep reaching for it in dim places, an app with a dimmable light can be easier: LoupeLens opens straight into a magnifier with up to 40x zoom and a flashlight you can adjust while you zoom.
